Nusa Penida Island

Bali + Nusa Penida

Bali + Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is located 25 kilometers from Bali. The island is a Balinese Hindu visited often. Goes mainly to the temple Ped, which houses the dreaded demon I Macaling. The Balinese have a duty at least once in their life to come and pray to him to bring him a lot of offerings, to not antagonize him.

The Nusa Penida Island is 25 km off Bali, just one hour boat ride from Sanur or Padangbai. Whole island is 70 km in circumference and its coastline is created by white-sand beaches and seaweed plantations from the North, wild rocky coast from the East, huge - hundreds of meters high cliffs from the South and rocky Toyapakeh Channel from the West. On the West coast is also located PENIDA DIVE RESORT. Toyapakeh Channel between Ceningan and Nusa Penida belongs among nature’s wonders, with 250 meters in depth it is one of the world’s deepest channels between two islands and is still to be explored. The deep channel is probably the reason of appearance of ocean sunfishes (Mola Mola) in this area. Nusa Penida is bypassed by five major currents that bring nutritive substances and guarantee the rich fauna and flora varieties. On the island there are about 40 villages. The capital town called Samplan is located on the North side and serves also as ferry boat harbor. The main occupation of the locals is seaweed planting (for food and cosmetics) and fishing on the Nort-Eastern part of the island near Suana village. The island is quite mountainous, the highest hill is 503 meters above sea level. There are several paved roads on the island, perfect for motorbike trips. The road around the Northern part is also suitable for bicycle trips. The population is 40 thousand, mostly followers of Hinduism and just small community in Toyapakeh are Muslims. The climate is dry without any severe precipitations mostly from May to October. The rainy season lasts from November till the end of March. Among the most interesting spots on the island belongs Karangsari – the sacred bat cave, Ped- one of the most famous Hindu temples, Temblin – splendid canyon with fresh water lake and Hindu temple, Last beach – magical beach in between cliffs, Manta view – spot for viewing natural beauties, Sea crater with breathtaking natural pool, or Crystal bay – romantic sand beaches. Nusa Penida is suitable for longer stay and we recommend minimum 3-5 days for its discovering. To divers we recommend 5-7 diving days. To diving photographers and cinematographers with the interest in documenting the life of MOLA MOLA we recommend 7-12 days.
